PHC Clutch offers a range of troubleshooting guides for common symptoms found in the clutch systems.

Clutch Noise

Clutch repairs are part of most workshop’s weekly job schedules.
PHC Clutch has provided the following helpful tips on clutches and clutch repair.

Noise 1: Noise when in neutral

The cause may be because of lack of care during installation, splines have been damaged by the gearbox main shaft. At this time, you should replace the main shaft (if damaged) and/or clutch disc. Also, make sure that the splines properly match up and lubricate with a proper quantity of grease.

Noise 2: Noise while pressing the clutch pedal

This noise can be due to off-centering of the release bearing or misalignment of the main shaft. You need may need to replace the release bearing and realign the engine and the gearbox.
Noise 3: Noise during the release

This can be caused by a seized/worn pilot bearing/bushing. You may need to replace the pilot bearing/bushing.
Noise 4: Noise when bearing contacted

There are several causes related to the noises:
  • Torn seal
  • Overheating during slippage
  • Leakage of the grease
  • Incorrect free travel adjustment
If these are situations, you need to check the diaphragm for damage and replace the bearing and adjust free travel.
Noise 5: Dampering spring breakaway

The causes of this noise are because:
  • Wrong clutch cover size used
  • Excessive release travel
  • The clutch disc is installed on the wrong side
  • Engine torque in excess of disc specification
To repair you need to replace the clutch disc, adjust the clutch operating system (such as pedal height, self-adjusting system, clutch linkage…) and ensure to install the clutch disc properly.  Be careful that the correct kit is used on the application.

Noise 6: Unusual wear on the torsion springs

The cause of the noise is over-torque applied to the clutch disc. It is necessary to replace a clutch kit. Also, confirm the specification of the clutch is adequate for engine output.
Noise 7: Rattle/Release issue

A common cause is the retaining clip not being correctly installed on the fork. The method of repair is to install a new bearing ensuring the bearing is secure to the fork.
